More than 100 leaders and visionaries from across industries gathered in Georgia on August 10 for TIME’s Honoring the March: An Impact Family Dinner, an event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The dinner, held at Atlanta’s National Center for Civil and Human Rights and in partnership with American Family Insurance (AFI), is TIME’s latest remembrance of the historic 1963 civil rights demonstration that took place on the steps of Washington’s Lincoln Memorial. Over the decades, TIME has covered and commemorated the march in many ways, including King’s ‘Man of the Year’ 1964 cover, a 2020 ‘Equality Issue’ that was an homage to King’s legacy, and ‘The March’ virtual reality experience in 2020 that was also made possible through a partnership with AFI. For years, the 3D software development tool Unreal Engine has powered some of the biggest video games on the market—from Fortnite to Valorant—as well as television shows like The Mandalorian and even Porsche engineering. On Tuesday, Epic Games showed off the public release of Unreal Engine 5, the engine’s first major update in 8 years. The company promises that the new updates to Unreal Engine 5 will make it the bedrock for the next generation of Web 3 developments—from metaverse experiences to movies, and of course, video games. 2023 proved to be a blockbuster year for video games. Hotly anticipated platform titles debuted on a monthly, and sometimes biweekly, basis, consuming video gamers' time (and the contents of their wallets) like some viral new version of the ever insatiable Pac-Man. But it’s not as though gamers minded much, given the quality of the output.
